It’s always magical to watch what happens during our Grief Groups. Different people, mostly strangers, come together in nervous anticipation, then in just a few hours you see and feel the mood shift – individually and collectively. This is the beauty of the Led by Horses program, and why I started it.

I have walked with grief many times, but thought I’d never recover from my despair and devastation after my husband Bob’s death in 2008. Just walking out on the land here at Dove Creek, and at times with the horses, soothed my soul. This place is sacred. The horses seemed to sense my sadness and would come up to me, one at a time, while I was in their presence. They met me right where I was, in the heaviness of my grief, and made such a difference in finding a new way forward. For that I am truly grateful. 

Grief is not “one size fits all.” Some people attend our Grief Groups because of the loss of a loved one or maybe a pet. Others have experienced a big change with their job, home or land, health, or relationships. The world has felt extra heavy the past few years; just being near the horses helps.

I once had a client tell me, “If I go there (to my sadness), I’m afraid I’ll never return.”

My response was, “If you don’t go there, you’ll never return – there will be a piece of your heart missing.”

We live in such a busy, busy culture. Society does not give time or space to our grief. Horses are perfect because they intuitively sense our emotional state, and physical touch is so soothing. We have many people who have never been around horses, then find a favorite animal by the end.
