Dove Creek Ranch and Equine Rescue Internship

Job Description

Through this internship, participants will gain practical experience as a member of Dove Creek Ranch. The intern will participate in all phases of the daily operations of a non-profit horse rescue; which include assisting staff members with the rehabilitation and retraining of horses, creating marketing materials of horses available for adoption, and provide support to adoption and horse sponsorship programs.

General Responsibilities

  • Photograph and video horses available for adoption
  • Keep inventory on horses in rehabilitation and available for adoption, for website updates
  • Respond to and schedule adoption and horse sponsorship inquiries
  • Coordinate farm inspections prior to adoption
  • Communicate with the public; giving tours, receiving donations, promote volunteer day
  • Data entry; maintaining accurate horse records (veterinarian, farrier, dental, shots, deworming,
    training, etc.)
  • Respond to emails and return phone calls
  • Assist or lead volunteer days
  • Grooming
  • Shadowing or assisting with the horses veterinarian care
  • Assist with training and overseeing the exercise routines (groundwork, saddle work, riding)
  • Training of general ground manners and basic handling
  • Assist or perform feeding tasks
  • Cleaning and keeping of stalls and tack room organized
  • Assist with all other related assigned task

Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Must be professional and be willing to sign confidentiality agreements
  • Ability to work as a self starter
  • Prior knowledge and experience with horses
  • Resourcefulness, stress and time management skills, verbal communication and organizational skills
  • Flexibility with changes in task and priorities
  • Strong work ethic, moral standards, and a desire to learn and grow professionally

 

College Internship Program

Dove Creek Ranch and Equine Rescue is a 501(c)3 non profit, dedicated to the rescue, assistance, and rehabilitation of horses that have been neglected, uncared for, or abandoned.

 

Internship Information:

Dove Creek Ranch and Equine Rescue is working with local colleges to providing internship opportunities for credit to students interested in working in the equine industry. Other opportunities available are internships in business (running a non profit), social work, and teaching. College programs differ in how college credit for internships is awarded. Students should consult with their college advisor to determine if credit can be earned through a Dove Creek Ranch and Equine Rescue internship program.

 

Horse Training:

This program is designed to immerse participants in the daily operations of a non-profit horse rescue by giving them a unique opportunity to work with neglected and abused horses. Through education and interaction, students gain experience working with our horse trainer throughout the process. Interns can expect to gain significant equine husbandry experience, receive training in base rehabilitation, and learn about horse psychology and its application in training. This program is tailored to those seeking careers in equine management, horse rescue and rehabilitation, equine veterinary services, and horse training. Interns can expect to work with a population of 10-25 horses, a professional staff, and volunteers.

 

Dove Creek Ranch and Equine Rescue Internship: Examples of Jobs that may be assigned:

  • General care and maintenance of entire equine population
  • Maintaining facility in a clean, orderly, and safe manner (mucking stalls, paddocks, etc)
  • Maintaining daily records
  • Feed management
  • Medicating: identify and interpret medical problems and help administer under guidance of a vet
  • Training horses
  • Interacting with staff: getting to know staff on a personal level to create a positive work environment and open communication, relaying information, receiving staff approval before performing tasks, acting as a liaison between staff and volunteers to encourage open communication and resolve problems
  • Volunteer day coordination: matching volunteers with appropriate tasks based on staff instruction, assisting volunteers in completing task correctly, fulfilling needs in the presence and absence of volunteers, enforce ranch rules and regulations to ensure all volunteers and horses remain safe, educating volunteers with volunteer orientations
  • Public interaction: lead tours, receive donations, assisting in visits by the public during open houses and other scheduled events, represent Dove Creek Ranch and Equine Rescue in a professional manner at all times
  • Other duties as assigned by education coordinator, farm manager, or other staff
